Mystery Irish EuroMillions Player Scoops Massive Cash Prize

It wasn’t quite the jackpot, but when someone offers you just under a quarter of a million euros, you grab them with both hands.

Following a succession of rollovers, EuroMillions’ jackpot prize has risen to dizzying heights. All eyes were on the €72.1 million top prize as ticket sales closed on Tuesday, 17th January, with players hoping to become the first jackpot winner of 2017.

Sadly, the chain remained unbroken after the winning balls dropped, but a single ticket-holder from Dublin managed to snatched the second prize by matching five numbers plus one Lucky Star. The winning balls were 4, 16, 25, 43, 47 and Lucky Stars 2 and 10, with the lucky Dubliner bagging all but one of the latter set. Their prize? A tidy €239,149.

The identity of the winning player is not yet known, but National Lottery officials are desperately trying to track down the mystery ticket holder. Three other EuroMillions players also picked up second-tier prizes: two of them in France and another in Spain.

While it is of course a shame that no one managed to bag the top prize this time, that means that tonight’s jackpot has now escalated to an estimated €80 million, with that already eye-watering amount likely to grow even further as players chase both the gargantuan prize and the honour of becoming 2017’s first EuroMillions millionaire.

Tickets for tonight’s draw are on sale now — could this be your lucky day?
